Independent
Technical Evaluator (ITE)

Within the Military Air Domain the requirement for Independent Technical Evaluation (ITE) is detailed in MAA Regulatory Article 1220 and independent assessment is viewed as essential in ensuring the airworthiness of air systems.

Regulatory Article (RA) 1220 states:

  • The Equipment Safety Assessment and Project SMS should be subjected to  independent evaluation and audit consisting of: Independent analysis of the data evidence supporting the Equipment Safety Assessment, including, where appropriate, a qualitative assessment of aircraft handling, Human Machine Interface (HMI) and crew workload undertaken by an Independent Technical Evaluator (ITE)
  • The ITE should be competent and suitably qualified individuals or teams, independent of the outcome or processes they are reviewing
  • The ITE should be recognised as a Subject Matter Expert (SME) in the field which is being reviewed. Whilst Air Domain focused, AR ITE policy, processes and procedures are domain agnostic and designed to enable ITE delivery across all domains including Maritime and Land Domains
